Over-Exposed Self-Correction: Practices for Managing Competence and Morality

When repairing a problem in their talk, speakers sometimes do more than simply correct an error, extending the self-correction segment to comment on, repeat, apologize, and/or reject error. We call this “over-exposed self-correction.” In over-exposing may manage (and reflexively construct) range of attributional troubles that it has raised. discuss how over-exposed can be used to: (a) remediate errors might suggest speaker’s incompetence; and (b) redress heard as revealing relational “evils” (implicating inadequate other-attentiveness) or societal (conveying problematic social attitudes prejudices). The article thus shows conversation analytic work on repair provide platform for studying emergence management socially relationally charged issues interaction. data come from diverse corpus talk-in-interaction American, British, Australian English.
